What is Fulfillment in Life?
A friend of mine in his mid-forties who lives in India retired from full-time work recently. Having worked as a software engineer in the best of companies, he did really well for himself. Saved a lot of money and could afford an early retirement. What we’d like to do is to deep dive into his case and try to debate whether he achieved fulfillment in life. He does intra-day stock trading now, but the purpose is not mainly to earn a living from it. He has his savings earned from his job, his part-time job is more to stay occupied. Now, do you think he achieved fulfillment in life? It might be a brilliant question to ask him, but the point I am trying to make is that do we need to work as a money-making machine perennially to be fulfilled?
Hence, the key to answer that question is whether we make ourselves hostage to materialism. Do we really need all the goodies that we keep on yearning for? Like buying a bigger house or a new sports car? Then if we keep on buying these stuffs, are we not hostage to mortgages? Does our life not turn into slavery for mortgages then? Fulfillment is synonymous with happiness. So then the question is, what gives us happiness in life?
Let’s deep dive into learning more about the 5 steps to find fulfillment in life. This is my take, please yours in the comments section.
5 Steps to Find Fulfillment in Life
Discover and Follow Your Passion
Since you are on this blog, most likely you would come across a lot of online material that illustrates how someone is making millions of dollars online? Say by blogging or making YouTube videos? So has it not occurred to you seeing all these online content that you are probably missing out? Or you should also try to do something similar?
Then do you think you can feel fulfilled if you can also reproduce similar content that makes a lot of money? Or even try to reproduce? The question here is, what is it by doing gives you the genuine joy or what makes you happy? Do you really enjoy the work you do or do you enjoy doing what you do in your spare time?
Say, for example, I try to find time to write apart from the work I do for a living and studying for my online MBA. It took me a while a to figure out that I enjoy writing. I enjoy sharing my thoughts and my ideas with all of you, even if I don’t know you. Even if my blogs can help or influence you, I would think it is time well spent for me. I would really feel happy to have given back to the world selflessly.
We would have seen or heard about it in several motivation contents, the word “calling”. I cannot overemphasize on why we really need to find our calling and follow it.
Learn Continuously
Then comes learning. Do you believe in lifelong learning? Many of us do, then what are you doing to practice it? Are you actively trying to upgrade your skills? Or are you pursuing any formal education or higher studies? Because there is no age to getting done with learning or education. Do you believe in that? Because I do verbatim.
Then how does pursuing education give us a sense of fulfillment? Did you ever realize it that when you are studying or trying to gain a new skill to develop yourself, it gives an immense sense of joy and satisfaction? For sure, as along as you love the topic or subject you are studying for and you are doing it at your own free will, that is not being forced through your gauntlet.
I have experienced it. That is why I am sharing with you. I absolutely love studying for my MBA. It is for sure a topic for another blog post. The subjects I study in there resonate a lot with me and also the work I do for a living. So the key is to find a course or topic for higher education that you truly feel interested in and that will help you professionally.
Live a Minimalist Life
I have written extensively about living a minimalistic life. So can’t stop overemphasizing it again. For those of you who are new to my blog, minimalism is to own that you truly need. That also means discarding what you don’t really need. This can be a liberating experience. Living in the United States, it is not uncommon to not fall prey to materialism. Then, in this process of materialism, these stuffs that we buy control our lives and not ideas or thoughts that truly give us joy. Just imagine, because you want a bigger house and a fancier car, you work to repay your mortgage. Then are you free to do that you really love to do? Or you need to do the work that you may hate just to trade hours for money because you need to pay those hefty mortgages. Both principal and interests.
Something to think about.
Achieve Financial Independence
So why is achieving financial freedom important for finding fulfillment in life? How is wealth and fulfillment in life related? You may say well, money gives us a feeling of fulfillment. For sure it is true, but money also gives us the choice to do what really enjoy doing. Hence, achieving financial freedom gives us an option to do the work that we love doing. The work we do after achieving financial independence is not to earn money, but that gives us an opportunity to follow our passion. This may sometimes also give us the opportunity to rediscover what is are looking for in our lives. Or to find out the purpose of our lives.
Find Your Purpose in Life
This segues to finding the purpose of our lives. If we continue to live in the rat-race, then we might not get the time to introspect and try to think about what is the purpose of our lives. This also goes back to what is the “calling” of our lives. Would you agree that we all are born with some calling? Then do we all find our calling in life? Thereafter, do we spend time to nurture and develop our calling to do something meaningful in our lives? That which is not only helps us but can add value to the entire world or our nation or communities?
Conclusion on 5 Steps to Find Fulfillment in Life
To summarize, the 5 steps to find fulfillment in life are first, discover and follow your passion, second learn continuously, third live a minimalistic life, fourth achieve financial independence and fifth find your purpose in life.
When I think about writing, I think about it as my meditation. After I thought about it a lot, I found writing gives me a sense of joy and fulfillment. Sometimes I think it is like the purpose of my life. The other reason I write is to share my thoughts and ideas with the world. I do hope that my writings can be of any use to my readers. After all, I exist because we exist. I firmly believe blogging is one of the best ways to give back to our world that gives us so much. Blogging to me is a way to express my gratitude to everyone who has helped me achieve what I have, both directly or indirectly. Because we live in an interconnected world and we cannot say anyone can be successful without the help from someone else.
