Is Pursuing Passion After Day Work Considered Work?

Let’s say we come back home after a hectic day at work or slog through the entire week, then have sometime to rejuvenate during the weekend. If we want to pursue our passion during these off-hours, would we call it work? Since we can interpret is in several ways. It is still some sort or work no matter whether we are getting paid for it. But most of the time that we spend doing what we love doing isn’t stressful because we just don’t count the hours working on it.

Usually the time that we spend working on late in the evenings after our day jobs or during the weekends is what we are preparing ourselves for the next major work phase of our lives. So what does it actually mean? For what we do in our day jobs is what we are already skilled for. Hence, we get paid for the value we create or the service we provide in our day jobs. But what we do after our day jobs is essentially what we are trying to develop skills on. Something for which we can get paid for in future when we get skilled in it. Does it make sense?

So can we consider pursuing our passion after the hectic day jobs work? It depends. If we enjoy doing something that we lose track of time and can’t sleep until we finish it then maybe it is not working for us. But if we feel tired of doing this and think it is just another activity that we want to accomplish during off-hours, we might consider it work.

To Decouple and Then Focus on Day Work

Now, many times we need a hobby or something we do that helps us decouple from our day jobs. Since this is like a refreshing activity that just takes our minds away from the daily chores. So, in most cases, we might not call it work as well. Since it is that activity that we just love doing to relax our minds. More so, it could be as simple as doing some housework, or repair on vehicles or just spending time with family doing something that they want us to spend time on. Perfectly fine, this is our way of rejuvenating and recuperating from our hectic work that earns our livelihoods.

But many times it is this hobby that can segue into our next skill that could either become a side hustle or a full-time job later. So it is also part of the journey to find out what we really enjoy doing if we don’t have to earn a likelihood anymore.

Discover Your Calling

This segues into discovering your calling in life. And to discover your calling, you need to do something you love doing, which is also work. The first thing is to understand what this work might even look like. With our hectic work week, we are busy accomplishing deadlines and meeting schedules. As if we are in a rat race, making money for a better life tomorrow. Or even survive today paying our bills and making ends meet. But is life all about paying bills and saving for retirement? Because we all get only one life, and when we are in our death beds in hindsight, would we agree we lived our lives? Accomplished what we yearned for? Left a legacy for the world, not just our family members? Do we have a bigger aim in life than we just think it to be?

Thus, the time that we get after our day works is just the time that we need to discover our calling in life. So what is calling? We all are unique and have abilities that differ totally from others. So that means we all are born with unique skills to accomplish something that no one has achieved in this world. Would you agree? Therefore, this is what we call our calling. Since it is the skill or ability to do something unique for the betterment of the world or humanity. So we also need time to discover this calling because most of the time it is not so obvious. Or we are so busy meeting our ends meet we just don’t have the time to think about it or introspect.

Opportunity to Learn and Develop

Now the money we earn today is because we can capitalize on the skills we already have. But we can also earn money in the future by leveraging the skills that we are developing today. Many times we learn these skills at our current workplace, but most of the time we need to develop these skills ourselves after work. So the work that we do outside of a day’s work is the opportunity to learn and develop new skills. Because these new skills are the foundation for future earnings. Since in life if we are not gaining new skills, we are like stale and can become stagnant in life. That can be in terms of our current career or potential future careers.

Make It a Side Hustle

So how can you leverage this work that you do outside of a day’s work in terms of additional cash flow for you? Can you generate income from this work or turn it into a side hustle? To put this into perspective, I love writing blog posts outside of my work, but have I been able to generate any income from it? Actually not. Which is okay for me as long as someone like you can read it and drive any value from it. That pays me back. But on a serious note, convert your work outside work to a side hustle that can generate some incremental income for you.

Can Become Full-time Work in Future

Just imagine that work that you do after work, spending all the hours for which you lose count of hours, can become your full-time work? Would you enjoy it? Something that you love doing and also it pays your bills. Since pursuing your passion as your full-time job can be the most fulfilling thing in your life. Many times it might pay you less than what you had been making as a full-time worker. But do we really needs millions of dollars to live a happy and fulfilling life?

According to an article by Quentin Fottrell from MarketWatch on March 4, 2018, psychologists analyzed 1.7 million people in 164 countries for earnings with life satisfaction. This accommodated differences in cost of living across countries. They found the ideal income is $60,000 to $75,000 a year for emotional well-being.

In the US, additional studies show that for an average household income over $75,000 per year only has a marginal increase in happiness. Meaning, we need about $75,000 household income to live a happy life. Since happiness is not directly proportional to income after the threshold of $75,000 per year.

Help Find Fulfillment in Life

Achieving fulfillment in life is bigger that achieving all the success and money in life. Does it sound like an abstract concept? It might because it is. Since I define fulfillment in life as a sense of achievement that gives us true happiness. That gives a feeling of achieving our calling in life, something we can be proud of achieving when we playback our life reminiscing about on our deathbeds. A sense of leaving behind a legacy in this is world when we are no more. No load of money can give us this fulfillment in life when we are about to die. It is only the feeling that whether we have lived a fulfilled life, that can give us the sense of self-actualization or living our lives to our fullest potentials.

How to Make Time to Pursue Passion After Work

Then how do we make time to pursue our passions after our day jobs? It is often difficult. Since we have a personal commitment to family and friends. Or some leisure time to rejuvenate. Then there is also some work at home that we need to accomplish, which could be as simple as mowing your lawn or maintaining your house or car.

In a nutshell, it boils down to your priorities and an act of balancing. Since it is often challenging. It could even entail some sacrifice. But if your passion is something you truly want to pursue, often, you will find time for it. Since it spurs your will power to pursue it. That is what we mostly do because once we have the will, we find out a way for it.
